Usage: nailed to wood powerline poles to identify the company which owns them
These were used to mark the poles owned by Gulf States Utilities Company (GSU Co.).
Gulf States Utilities was first incorporated under that name in 1925. Entergy Corporation's merger of it was completed on December 31, 1993.
As of 2004, there are still a lot of these on old GSU poles. Entergy is not bothering to replace the tags, so they stay there until the whole pole is replaced. Most of Entergy's poles are of a darker wood color than GSU's.
