Story
6/12/2010 -- talking with Bill, and he told us the story of how he got this. A friend of his called up, and said, "um, I think this guy is coming your way". He'd put an ad in the newspaper, and this guy responded from the State College PA area. He showed up with 2 CD 173 Brookfields and a CD 154 WT in dark red amber, one of the 173s hanging out of a hole in the bag that held all three of them swinging in his hand. He wanted $800 each for the 173s and $500 for the other one, but would take $2,000 for the three. He didn't have the money, and said, the only guy I know who could buy those is Bill. The guy said, OK, and left. After thinking about it a while, the friend wondered if the guy had headed over to Bill's, so he called. Bill wanted to know when he'd left, and figured he had about 90 minutes if the guy was actually coming over. Also sounded like he'd want cash if he was on his way (big guy, rusted out Lincoln that looked like they were living it it, and don't invite him in, because he smells!). Bill had about 12 minutes to make it to the bank if he wanted the cash, and he did, so he went and got it. His wife thought he was nuts -- he'd just have to return the money to the bank on Monday -- the odds were way against anything like this happening. They had just sat down to lunch when the bell rang -- and looking out the window, there was a big Lincoln all rusted out. Bill went to the door and stepped out, and there was this big guy with a bag hanging from his hand, with the dome of a 173 peaking out. Bill said, my friend called, said you want $2,000 for them? The guy said yes, Bill asked to see them, handed over the money, and the guy was gone. I got this from him when he auctioned it off -- I was high bidder by about $40 (it was a single, blind bid). The second place guy was a bit irked that he'd played games with funny numbers. Given that the condition was pretty much pristine, Bill delivered in in person rather than ship it via mail. I like to think this is the one that was hanging out of the hole in the bag a couple times!
